Dwight Gooden Had His Five Year Old Son In The Car When He Was Arrested For A DWI

Die hard baseball fans will remember that the New York Mets’ Dwight Gooden was one of the most amazing pitchers ever. Dr. K (aka Doc Gooden) mixed a great 95 mph fastball with a movement and an amazing curveball that buckled batter’s knees. Sadly, the four-time All-Star’s playing career and life after baseball was marred by alcohol and drug abuse. Apparently the DWI arrest in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey came after “three and one half years” of sobriety, stated the New York Daily News. His five-year-old son Dylan was reportedly in the car.

Dwight Gooden, 45, faces multiple charges

As well as being intoxicated while driving, Gooden has also been charged with DWI with a child passenger, endangering the welfare of a child, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of the two car accident. The accident was reported though a 911 call.

Dwight Gooden was eventually released on his own recognizance, reports the Daily News. The drug involved has not been released by the New Jersey Police, although Gooden has had problems with cocaine and alcohol in the past. Financial struggles were part of the territory. If Dwight Gooden were to use installment payday loans, I would hope he’d use them appropriately.

Missing life – and the Hall of Fame

There’s little doubt that if Dwight Gooden hadn’t struggled with substance abuse during his baseball career, he’d be on his way to the Hall of Fame. His career was shortened by battles with cocaine and the bottle as well as the five separate years he spent in court and in rehab stints. That doesn’t even touch on what Gooden lost because of his addiction. This is a struggle he has with his and his family and it private, one that might have even involved no credit check personal loans during times of hardship.

Regarding his playing days, the evidence is ample. He finished with a 194-112 record as well as a 3.51 ERA. His 162-game average, according to Baseball Reference, was a 16-9 season with 7.4 strikeouts per nine innings, both of which are excellent. Those stats don’t even accurately represent his early life career magnificence. He set the Major League rookie record of 276 strikeouts and 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings in the 1984 national Rookie of the Year. The assumption here is that you don’t count rookie “Matches” Matt Kilroy’s 513 strikeouts for Baltimore of the American Association in 1886 – the rules were quite different then, and today the American Association is considered to have been less than Major League caliber.

Dr. K’s year was 1985

After an astounding rookie season, Dwight Gooden got even better. In 1985 he just went 24-4 with a 1.53 ERA and a league leading strikeout of 268 strikeouts. Major League history, it was one of the most dominant pitching seaons. The next season, Gooden played a large role in the New York Mets’ first world series winning since 1969. The red flags began to show, however. Because he was on a cocaine binge, he missed the team’s victory parade, and he was arrested after fighting police in his hometown of Tampa, Florida by December 13, 1986. He had a few victories afterward but there was nothing like what had been before. On May 14, 1996 he threw a no hitter while on the New York Yankees, the team who won titles in that season and in 2000.

How is it possible to let someone who endangers a young child walk?

That’s a question for New Jersey Police to answer, but they aren’t talking. Dwight Gooden clearly needs help, but he should not be allowed to place a five-year-old at risk again. Hopefully skating on fame wasn’t the situation.
